Asia-Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP)

Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) was initially established in 1977 and renamed APMP 1980, it's one of five Specialist Regional Bodies (SRB) in APEC, and it holds General Assembly once every year to provide the platform that each field of technique exchanged for realizing the current development and trend of SI Units, the standards of measurement techniques in each country, and metrology of requirements about international industries; the members collectively assist the developing countries in Asia with building national measurement standards for raising measurement techniques.

Our country joined APMP, the three National Metrology Laboratories are Center for Measurement Standards, Industrial Technology, Telecom Labs., CHT Co. Ltd, and Institute of Nuclear Energy Research, Atomic Energy Council, Executive Yuan Research Institute, The institutes joined APMP in 1992, 1999, and 1999 respectively.
There are 12 Technical Committees in APMP, such as acoustics, ultrasound and vibration, electricity and magnetism, fluid flow, length, mass, photometry and radiometery, an equivalence of national reference systems for chemical and biological measurements, Quality System, radioactivity and neutron, thermal measurement, time and frequency, and materials.

BSMI legislated The Weights and Measures Act for harmonizing the use of weights and measuring units and ensuring the accuracy of measuring results, in accordance with the act, BSMI set up the above three national measurement standards laboratories which shall be responsible for research and experiment, establishment, maintenance, custody, supply, calibration and other relevant matters in connection with the highest measurement standards for the nation, BSMI delegates the participation in the relevant affairs of APMP to these labs and supervises them, besides, urge them to develop techniques so that national measurement standards of the nation synchronize with SI and satisfy the requirement of industries.

BSMI assigns the representative to attend APMP conferences every year for realizing the latest trend in national metrology; the developments of SI and metrology organization of each nation, and the relevant information about industrial developments are acquired by participating in General Assembly and international conferences.
